Prayer of the Week: Tulip Café

Tulip Café,
place of safety,
in the middle of town,
walking distance from my home.
Refuge of loneliness,
centre of friendship;
tea freshly brewed,
one cup in every seven free of charge,
Tulip Café,
balm for my soul.

People need people.
You said of Adam,
‘it is not good that the man should be alone.’
Friends share a smile,
waiters who have you as their model
in Tulip Café;
waitresses who listen with hearts that understand,
hearts that do not judge,
hearts that free me to be who I am,
share a cup of 70p tea
in Tulip Café.

Prayer of the Week: Light of Jesus

Light of Jesus surround us.
Light of Jesus guide us.
Light of Jesus be within us.
Light of Jesus protect us.
Light of Jesus enfold us.
Light of Jesus transform us,
that we may be children of the Light
and walk in your Light.

Prayer of the Week: New beginnings

Lord Jesus Christ,
we are not good at letting go of the past,
at recognising there are times when we need to move on in life;
to take a step forward in faith if we are ever truly to grow.
We prefer the security of the familiar,
the comfort of that
which does not stretch or challenge us too far,
and we are wary of the prospect of change,
afraid that it might ask more of us than we are willing to give.

We are not good at letting go of the old and putting on the new,
at turning away from our former way of life
and taking instead the way of the cross.
We are reluctant to abandon old habits,
fearful of being thought different,
unwilling to deny ourselves the pleasures of this world
for the promise of the world to come.

So we try to keep a foot in both camps,
to combine the old self with the new.
We think we can balance the two,
but, of course, we cant,
and the result is that we compromise both
and embrace neither.
Help us to understand that, while the old has its place,
there are some areas in life where a complete break is needed,
a turning away from what has been,
before we are ready to receive what shall be.

Lord Jesus Christ,
you want to work within us
to finish the new creation you have begun.
Give us courage to trust you completely,
so that you may refashion our lives to your glory.
We ask it in your name.
Amen.

Prayer of the Week: The promise fulfilled

As we near the end of Advent the promise made to us is now to be fulfilled. The amazing thing is that the God who comes does not appear as the great king, judge, warrior or liberator we could have expected, but as a tiny baby. And this helpless baby is born in the most humble of situations – as a refugee in a borrowed stable.

It is a fitting parable that the basilica in in Bethlehem, where this mystery of the birth of Jesus is celebrated, can only be entered by stooping down. Pilgrims must bend low to greet their Saviour. Mary, the humble girl from Nazareth, was the first to welcome Jesus: ‘Ahalan vesahalan – My tent is your tent.’ We call this mystery the Incarnation, the astounding news that God is to be found no longer in the heavens but here, on earth in ordinary human events. This is Good News.

Prayer of the Week: Third Sunday of Advent

Blessed are you, Lord our God,
who has promised us your salvation
through the prophets,
and that in you we will find healing and peace.
We come to you,
for in our coming we turn away from the darkness
and enter into the light of your presence
and your love.

Mighty God and Saviour,
we pray for your Church throughout the world,
that it may witness to you
not only in word but also in deed.
May the Church reflect your love for the world
and show your acceptance and forgiveness
for all peoples.

Come, Lord,
for our hope is in you.
Amen.

Prayer of the Week: The hope of Advent

Lord Jesus Christ,
we remember today
how so many looked forward to your coming,
but we remember also
how it became harder to go on believing
as the years went by;
how hope started to splutter and dreams began to die
until, finally, you came -
the fulfilment of prophecy,
the culmination of Gods purpose,
the definitive expression of his love.
Lord of all,
the Word made flesh,
bring hope to your world today.

Prayer of the Week: First Sunday of Advent

Lord,
its the beginning
of Advent.
Ive got a choice:
to do nothing with my time
other than the usual and expected,
or instead
to think about what it all means,
why we celebrate Christmas at all,
what you being born all those years ago
means to me in the here and now.

Its not really a difficult choice, Lord,
but I guess its going to require me
to put a little bit more effort in
than usual.
But its effort I want to put in, Lord.
I want to explore,
to learn,
to question,
to discover.
Not just at this time of year,
but throughout my life.

Help me this year, Lord,
to really look at your birth
and perhaps
find my own beliefs
and faith in you
given new life.

Amen.
